The I-85 and I-385 interchange accommodates more than 200,000 vehicles per day in the Greenville metro area.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation awarded a $241 million contract to the Flatiron-Zachry joint venture to reconfigure the congested junction. KCI reached out to offer construction engineering services for the complex project. Our team’s previous relationship with Flatiron initially led to KCI being awarded a few support excavation tasks. However, after successful completion of the assignments, the contractor quickly expanded the work to 46 total tasks.

Engineers performed a variety of services for the construction of 12 bridges and more than six miles of ramps and mainline roadway improvements. Challenges included difficult access over interstate traffic, limited median space and traffic closure restrictions. Our team’s innovative ideas and designs aided in both cost and time savings that helped to make the project a success.
