In select cities across the United States, Google is installing a fiber-optic network that boasts internet speeds up to 100 times faster than broadband. Our team was responsible for processing applications submitted by Google to attach their fiber to Duke Energy-owned poles. Using Duke engineering standards and NESC code compliance, designers were responsible for reviewing the proposed engineering make-ready work for guying, pole loading and clearances. KCI reviewed approximately 1,400 permits for 32,310 poles over a two-year time period. To meet the aggressive schedule, the design team turned around each permit in 10 days or less.
Once a segment was cleared for construction and installed, field technicians then performed a field audit of the completed work to ensure the fiber was installed as designed and did not create additional clearance violations.
