After the City of Laurel acquired an abandoned sports facility, it was renovated into a multi-use center to provide a variety of services for the local community.
The building, formerly comprised of steam rooms, a racquetball court, and a full-scale gym with workout equipment, was upgraded over multiple phases of construction. To keep the project team organized throughout the process, KCI construction managers acted as a full agent for the City and developed documentation control measures to refine communication and streamline information between contractors. A dedicated construction inspector remained on-site to mitigate challenges that arose, from the complex roof installation to ongoing temporary power distribution. A full second floor of the facility was constructed and additional upgrades were made to update the parking lot and surrounding landscaping.
Now complete, the facility offers a myriad of amenities including short- to long-term residential rooms for those who suffer an income gap, sleeping quarters for men and women during the winter, disaster relief materials, full showers, free laundry machines, a basketball court, a dance studio, hair studio, a medical/dental suite, recreational rooms, a food pantry storage and serving area, a clothing distribution center, open common areas with TVs and game rooms, and a third space downstairs to be used for events. With this new dedicated space for services such as resume writing, family and social services advisory, and job/career training in place, this facility strengthens the community and ensures that residents can look forward to receiving support for years to come.
