To meet the South Carolina Department of Transportation’s goal of rehabilitating 17 bridge decks on I-77 simultaneously, KCI was hired to perform construction engineering and inspection services on an accelerated schedule.

As the interstate functions as a major trucking route to the surrounding states, there was a high penalty cost of $10,000 per hour that the project was completed past schedule. With steep consequences tied to the endeavor, SCDOT selected inspectors by name and divided the contract into two phases. During phase I, the northbound side of the interstate was shut down for nine days and challenges regarding rebar depths during milling led to delays.

Through a proactive approach, inspectors that had finished significant work on their bridges were shifted to assist teams working on other ones and as a result, phase II featured improved coordination. After utilizing complex procedures such as milling, hydro-demolition, and latex-modified concrete overlay installation, our team identified critical defects, ensured compliance with regulatory requirements, and successfully finished the project on time.
